Rigveda in the called because it consists of Mantras called ‘Riks’ which correctly describe the properties, actions and nature of all things “Rich-Sthuthau’’. In this Rigveda there are eight Asttakas (Octads) beginning from Mantra “Agnimeede Purohitam’’ and ending with the Mantra terminating with the words “Yatha Vah Susahasati’’. In each Ashtaka or Octad there are eight Chapters and in the whole veda there are 2024 Vargas or sections. Again there are 10 Mandalas or Books in the Rigveda. In the first Mandala there are twenty four Anuvakas or lessons Comprising 191 Saktas (Hyms) making up a total of 1976 Mantras.

In the second Mandala there are four Anuvakas (lessons) Comprising 40 suktas or hyms. In this Mandala the total of all the Mantras is 429. In the third Mandala there are five Anuvakas in 62 Suktas or hymns. The total number of Suktas or hymns in 589. In the fifth Mandala there are six anuvakas in 87 Suktas. The total number of Mandras in this Mandala is 729.

In the sixth Mandala there are six Anuvakas in 57Suktas or hymns. The total number of Mantras in the Mandala is 565. In seventh Mandala there are six Anuvakas (lessons) in 104 hymns. Total Mantras are 851. In 8th Mandala 10 Anuvakas, 103 Sukthas and 1726 Mantras. Ninth Mandala there are seven anuvakas 114 suktas, 1097 mantras. And in the tenth Mandala there are 12 anuvakas as 190 suktas, 1754 Mantras also. Hence, in ten Mandalas of The Rigveda there are 85 Anuvakas (lessons) in 1018 Suktas or hyms. The total number of the Mantras in the Rigveda in 10589. Rigveda was revealed to Agni Rishi. according Sathapathee Brahmana.
